house with poolAs the weather warms, your kids have probably been starting longingly at the pool. Splashing around under the sun is a great way to pass the time, but you’ll need to make sure your pool is ready and safe before the fun can begin. Taking a bit of precaution now can help prevent future injuries, or worse.

Prepping the Pool

If your pool is still covered, brush away all the leaves and debris before removing the cover. It’ll make the task of cleaning go much faster.

Clean up the pool itself by scooping out leaves and debris that wiggled their way into the water.

Add water as needed to reach the appropriate fill level.

Test the water’s pH level and add the necessary chemicals to balance it out.

Check the pump and filtration system to ensure everything is working properly. Start the circulation and let the system run for at least one day.

The water can take a few days to clear and during this process, it’s best to clear out the filter every day.

Keeping it Safe

Grab hold of each ladder, handrail and diving board to ensure a secure attachment. Tighten up any bolts that have loosened.

The safest pools have self-closing gates around the perimeter. Inspect your gate and fix any blemishes as needed.

Never allow children to swim without supervision. A watchful adult should always be present.

A life ring, float and reaching pole should be easily accessible while the pool is in use to help rescue a swimmer in distress.

Keep a fully stocked first aid kit nearby to treat bumps, scrapes and any other injuries that may occur around the pool.

Get Coverage

Review your home insurance with your independent insurance agent to ensure that your liability coverage is enough to protect you from the possibility of pool injuries. It’s important that your agent knows about your pool because if not, any related claims will likely be denied.
